Misty’s Adoption Journey

137

In celebration of National Adoption Month, we share with you Misty’s adoption journey.  Misty loves being a mommy to Aaron and Orin.  She marvels in the little moments and celebrates the big ones like the recent finalization of Orin’s adoption on August 26, 2013.  This single parent, who works full time as a biologist, says that being an adoptive parent is a different kind of motherhood because it happened on her own terms.  We asked Misty to tell us more about her experience as an adoptive parent with Children’s Bureau and her life with Aaron and Orin.  Read More.

Celebrity Chefs Stir Up Funds

140Chef Mary Sue Milliken and Julia Stewart
The 4th Annual Celebrity Chefs & Wine Tasting held on October 10 at the scenic AT&T Center – Penthouse in downtown Los Angeles stirred up great food and funds raising more than $275,000 for the agency’s child abuse prevention work.  Nearly 500 guests enjoyed mingling with America’s top chefs, sampling delicious cuisine, enjoying wines from around the world and indulging in exclusive auction offerings.  Julia Stewart (Chairman & CEO, DineEquity, Inc.) served as the Event Chair while ABC 7’s Tina Malave, host of Eye on L.A., was the evening’s emcee.Bon Appétit Management Co. was the presenting sponsor.”The best part about this event is that all of the proceeds go towards helping Children’s Bureau prevent child abuse. They offer their own menu of innovative programs that guide, teach and support parents on their journey to raise successful, productive children,” said Chef Mary Sue Milliken.

Our deepest appreciation and thanks to the event committee, chefs, wineries, corporate sponsors, volunteers and guests who helped to make this evening a shining success!

Invest in a Share of Childhood

145The 2013-2014 Annual Appeal launched this month with the goal of raising $555,000. The funds go directly towards our child abuse prevention work that isn’t covered by government grants or contracts.  We’re off to a terrific start with CB Trustee Randy Bort making the first donation, CB Trustee Rocky Laverty making the first multi-year pledge and 100% participation by CB’s Trustees in Orange County.

“Lisa and I strongly believe that the early years of children’s lives substantially impact their futures.  Children’s Bureau focuses on children and families who are most vulnerable, at the most impactful time in their lives, to provide solid foundations for growth. Families are given the necessary resources and support that many of us take for granted.  Moreover, each dollar invested in the early years of children’s lives pays off many times over for the children and their parents as well as the communities in which they live,” said Randy Bort.

Inspiring Philanthropy

Calvary Christian School recently brought their second grade class to Children’s Bureau for its annual community service project. Preschoolers were paired up with a Calvary Christian buddy and did arts and crafts, read books, played games and enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal together. Calvary Christian donated books to the preschool and will return in May for their next Community Service Day.  What a wonderful way to teach young people the goodness of philanthropy!
