Dear Friends,
At Children's Bureau, we believe that children deserve to grow up safe, nurtured and healthy. We do this through a combination of innovative work in areas of child abuse prevention, treatment, research and advocacy.
From coaching a new parent, to preparing a child for kindergarten, to supporting a couple during troubled times, to helping kids in foster care find safe homes, to engaging neighbors to feel connected to their community, we do it all with a commitment to excellence and a passion for making a generational difference in the world. We are successful in our mission because of you.
What you do matters, and together, you helped Children's Bureau reach more than 30,000 vulnerable children and parents with the support and resources they needed to thrive.
We had an amazing year and you were a big part of it.
On behalf of the families we serve, a heartfelt thank you.
With gratitude,
Alex Morales, President & CEO
In 2016, Children's Bureau enjoyed extraordinary success on a national, regional and local level.
This happened because you cared enough to invest in our expertise and visionary work.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services selected Magnolia Community Initiative as one of three real-world innovative examples of collaborative efforts to prevent child abuse.
Dads Matter, a father engagement program in Orange County, represents the first national government grant in Children's Bureau history.
Strategies, our child abuse prevention training program, was renewed for another three years by the State of California and has expanded to cover the lower half of the state.
FAF Software, our research-validated data management assessment and evaluation tool launched with Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
Network Anaheim, a project inspired by Magnolia Community Initiative, continued to expand with guidance and financial assistance from the Orange County Community Foundation through its Accelerating Change Together (ACT) fund and the Orange County Children and Families Commission.
Our presence in Orange County expanded to seven family resource centers of which we are the lead agency at four of these sites.
Children's Bureau was a finalist for Organization of the Year at the 2016 Los Angeles Business Journal's Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards.
With 92 percent of families we serve living at or below the poverty level, Children's Bureau strived to help these children and parents through a variety of programs and services. Here's a snapshot of a few accomplishments made possible by your support:
100 adoptions finalized
362 children placed with loving foster homes
600 young children and their parents prepared for kindergarten and future academic success
3,000 parents guided on child development and bonding through our NuParent program
6,000 individuals provided with skills, resources and support through family resources centers
6,883 home visits to 865 at-risk families with young children in Orange County in need of parent education and services
20,000 families strengthened using FAF Software in the United States and Canada.
83,000 hours of mental health therapy and counseling provided to children who were abused and to families in need of professional help
Children's Bureau knows that parents who participate in our programs:
Gain confidence in themselves and their ability to parent.
Develop strong social connections and relationships with others in their community.
Build their network of support and increase each other's potential to be a positive force in their families and in their neighborhoods.

Ten years ago, Lisbeth was looking for classes where her daughter, Jocelynne, could grow academically. She found a flyer about Children's Bureau and decided to visit Oakwood Family Resource Center near her home. They enrolled in the preschool program and loved it. With her son, Anthony, Lisbeth participated in the NuParent program and with daughter, Lissette, she enrolled in the Family Enrichment program. Lisbeth continued her parenting education with Children's Bureau, enrolling in the women's support group, Community in Action group and nutrition classes.
"I have learned so much about myself and how I can be a better parent to my children. I am more social now and comfortable learning new things," said Lisbeth. Today, Lisbeth is a Parent Facilitator in her community. Children's Bureau has 16 parent-led groups that reach hundreds of families beyond its walls.
"Being a community facilitator gets me out of the usual routine and I love meeting new families. I feel honored to share my knowledge of child development and enjoy helping families find resources. It's nice to see how a family changes once they've been given some help. I also like how the parents really bond and come together if someone is in need," she said.
Lisbeth has been a part of Children's Bureau for 10 years and continues to stay engaged and active in her community. She says that if it weren't for Children's Bureau, she would be lonely and feel isolated.
"Children's Bureau is my second family. My children and I have built friendships that will last a lifetime," Lisbeth said.
