Sarah and Joaquin's Story
Sarah had always wanted to adopt but wasn’t sure she could as she was single. One day she saw a Children’s Bureau billboard and decided to call. Sarah attended an information meeting and liked what she heard. She immediately signed up and began the qualification process. In January 2008, Sarah was placed with a 14-month-old boy named Joaquin. Joaquin was born at 28 weeks, weighed only 2 pounds and suffered from numerous complications. He was in the hospital for four months before his birth mother could take him home. However, shortly after Joaquin was home, his birth mother suffered injuries from a domestic violence situation with Joaquin’s father. She and Joaquin fled to a women’s shelter for safety. The birth mother knew she couldn’t care for and keep Joaquin safe and put him up for adoption. Sarah signed adoption papers for Joaquin on June 19, 2008. He is now a healthy, energetic two-year-old with a happy and magnetic personality. Sarah says she can’t imagine her life without Joaquin.
