FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The League for Children Raises Vital Funds for Young Children Helped By Children's Bureau Los Angeles, CA - September 22, 2009
(Los Angeles, CA) On September 20, 2009, just 10 days before the Hotel Bel Air closed its doors for a two-year renovation project, The League for Children held its 23rd annual fundraiser to benefit Children's Bureau. This year’s event, Afternoon at Swan Lake, was chaired by Gloria Holden, an admired volunteer leader in Los Angeles, and raised an incredible $120,000 net for programs aimed at helping fragile children and their families succeed.
A cocktail reception and silent auction were held in the Garden Room where guests bid on more than 65 must-have items. In addition, vendors including the Andrew Weiss Gallery, Borrowed Bling, Empire Diamonds and Somper Furs set up shop and donated a percentage of items sold to Children's Bureau. Guests then enjoyed a beautiful garden luncheon on the lawn with music by harpist Bonnie Mohr. Television icon, Art Linkletter, along with Ambassador Glen Holden entertained the crowd of over 200 as they joked and shared timeless stories. Bill Gillespe was the grand prize raffle winner of the Ritz Carlton Destination Club and airfare for two. This year’s Patron Chair was Coco and Charles Skouras, Silent Auction Chair was Rosemary Booth and The League for Children's President is Gretchen Smith.
Funds raised at Afternoon at Swan Lake will go towards the preschool at Children’s Bureau’s Magnolia Place Family Center, located south west of Downtown Los Angeles. Kindergarten readiness is a primary goal of the Center and the preschool will provide the opportunity to prepare hundreds of children each year to enter school with the confidence, skills and knowledge they need for academic success.
For the past 23 years, The League for Children has raised over $2.8 million in charitable funds to help benefit Children’s Bureau (www.all4kids.org), a 105-year-old nonprofit leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. More than 14,000 children and their families are served each year throughout Southern California with programs that include foster care and adoption, parenting classes, family resource centers, mental health counseling, support groups and more.
