FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Honors Children's Bureau Chief Executive Officer as Social Worker of the Year LOS ANGELES, CA - April 4, 2008
Children's Bureau President & CEO Alex Morales was selected as 'Social Worker of the Year' for the Los Angeles region of the California Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Mr. Morales was honored at Homegirl Cafe in the Homeboy Industries newly premiered offices in Los Angeles on March 27 as part of National Professional Social Work Month, an annual observance that draws attention to the efforts of professional social workers who are working with, and advocating for, individuals in need.
'Alex Morales is a long-time innovator in the design of resources and supports for families and his successful effort to raise the funds to build Children's Bureau's new Family Center at Magnolia Place is such an exciting accomplishment for us all to witness,' said Barbara Andrade DuBransky, Director of Region I of the NASW California chapter. 'Magnolia Place represents the best of building partnerships to serve and support families and their surrounding communities.'
Each year, the NASW honors a social worker who has demonstrated strong leadership and exceptional dedication in working to influence social policies and advocate for children and families. Each honoree possesses a broad professional background in social work and has a diverse and multicultural spectrum of experiences.
Mr. Morales has been with Children's Bureau, a nonprofit leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse, for almost 20 years. Under his leadership, Children's Bureau has grown into an organization with a $24 million budget serving 14,000 children and parents each year. He is currently the Vice-President of the California Family Resource Association board of directors and has also served the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on their Blue Ribbon Task Force to improve foster care in Los Angeles County, as well as the Child Welfare League of America's National Commission on Family Foster Care. In 2004 he was honored for his efforts to strengthen Latino communities by the New American Alliance Institute. Mr. Morales is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and has extensive experience in providing direct clinical out-patient services. He is a graduate of the California State University at Long Beach and holds a master's degree from the University of Southern California School of Social Work, where he was recipient of the school's 1998 Distinguished Alumnus award.

NASW was founded in 1955 and, with over 150,000 members, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers. It promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers, and seeks to enhance the well being of individuals, families and communities through its advocacy.
Children's Bureau is a nonprofit leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse, mental health, family support and child development serving Los Angeles and Orange Counties for over 100 years. The agency's research and expertise has impacted children and families nationwide.
