Family Field Trip to Venice Beach

In August, more than 15 families and staff from Magnolia Place Family Center’s Parent-Child Enrichment Program took a field trip to Venice Beach. The idea for the trip came about when parents saw how their children enjoyed splashing around at the Center’s water tables and sand areas in the playground. The staff thought it was a terrific suggestion and began working with parents to plan the day.
The parents decided to bring a pot luck picnic and the staff provided sand toys. The families met the Center and then travelled together by bus to Venice Beach. Everyone got excited once the ocean was in sight. The children had a terrific time discovering the beach, swimming in the ocean, building sand castles and collecting sea shells. Parents bonded with their children and also connected with each other and the staff --- an important goal of the Enrichment Program.
“This was our first trip to the beach and we loved it! I could tell that my son had a great time because his face was filled with joy,” said Mrs. Morales, mother of Edgar Fabian who is 20 months old.
“It was a great experience to go to the beach with a group. We’ve been to the beach before but this was different because our children could play with each other…their friends,” said Norma Garcia, mother of Jaretzy Garica who is two years old.
The trip to Venice Beach provided a unique learning opportunity that was relaxing and fun for the entire family. The Enrichment Program staff is working to schedule more of these trips, such as the zoo, and is seeking ways to fund them so parents can attend at no charge. |
