One in five American children has a mental disorder, many related to abuse or neglect in their home. An estimated two thirds of these young people are not getting the help they need. As part of our treatment strategy, Children’s Bureau offers mental health services to children who have experienced abuse and families who might need professional help to get their lives on track. Each year, we provide more than 49,000 hours of mental health therapy and counseling to 6,400 children and their families. The treatment is provided in our clinics, a family’s home, school and foster homes. In fact, one of our specialties is helping foster and adoptive children with mental disorders to reduce their feelings of depression, anxiety, anger and/or withdrawl that are common when abuse occurs.
